“When is the best time to visit Malta?”
If you’re planning a trip to Malta, or if you are still deciding where to go, you might be asking the above question.
Malta is a very well-rounded country. Like every other place, it has its ups and downs, and its low and high seasons. Each season has its strengths and weaknesses. So knowing when to go is essential for you to get exactly what you’re looking for.
The best time to visit Malta is different for everybody. It depends on what you want to do while you’re there and how much you want to spend. And it also depends on what kind of weather you prefer.
So to make sure you enjoy your vacation to Malta, read on to find out what each season has to offer.
APRIL TO JUNE
Spring in Malta is very beautiful. Nature blooms everywhere and you can feel a certain atmosphere in the air. April to June is the so-called shoulder season. Temperatures and prices are the best you will get for a summer-ish vacation. There are a few tourists but it is not as crowded as the high season. Spring is the best shot to enjoy a tranquil holiday in Malta.
Average temperature: 22-24 °C (Degrees Celsius)
Weather: These months’ weather is kind of unpredictable. Although most days are sunny with mild temperatures, there can be very rainy or very hot days. Dusty and strong winds are also a possibility. June temperatures rise rapidly and mark the start of summer for most locals.
Things to do: Since temperatures start to rise, many people start swimming during May and June. A lot of clubs start to open for the summer season, which means that there is always somewhere for young adults to go. April to May offers the perfect weather to go sightseeing around Gozo, as it is the perfect comfortable weather. And for a fabulous (and absolutely free) way to spend your evening, you can take a nice long walk near the coast.
Prices: During these months, hotels and flights are moderately priced. In June prices tend to increase as temperatures rise and tourists flock in. Hotels are usually fully booked from June onwards.
April to June is the best to visit if you like warm temperatures and fewer people, and if swimming is an option not the goal. You will definitely find Malta as comfortable and relaxing during these months.
JULY TO SEPTEMBER
Since Malta is an island destination, summer is the peak or high season. It is by far the most popular time of the year. If you are going to Malta during these months, expect very crowded places and fully booked hotels. But you also get to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere this country has to offer (oh! and the glorious summer smell you find in cities near the beach).
Average temperature: 28-32°C
Weather: Summer temperatures in Malta are extremely high, sometimes even touching 38°C. The high level of humidity can sometimes make the temperatures even more unbearable. Days are the longest of the year; sunlight lasts up to 15 hours. And you also get to see beautiful, clear starry skies. September may bring about the first showers or light thunderstorms.
Things to do: Maltese feasts happen during summer. If you’re travelling to Malta in summer, you must visit a feast. Feasts happen all across the country every week all week, so it’s easy to experience this unique event. Beaches, water parks and water sports are a staple in the summer. You can party in clubs, some of which open only in summer. And you can also dine al fresco in a city near the beach (like Marsascala or Bugibba). Or you can sip cocktails near a pool. Read on for more activities to do in summer in Malta.
Prices: Prices during these months are undoubtedly the most expensive. Everything, especially anything you buy from near the beaches, is overpriced. Hotel and flight rates are the highest of all the year.
So if beaches and pools are not your scene, definitely skip these dates. On the other hand, if you like water sports and relaxing by cool water, then summer is best time to visit Malta for you!
OCTOBER TO NOVEMBER
October and November are less popular months. The hot season is over (although the beginning of October is quite hot too!). Things to do in Malta change a lot from summer and you get to appreciate another side to Malta.
Average temperature: 18-22°C
Weather: The beginning of October is still warm but from the middle onwards, temperatures begin to cool. You can expect the rainy season to start. There are a few thunderstorms every now and then, and wind starts to pick up. Humidity lessens a lot.
Things to do: October is the last month where you can enjoy dinner al fresco. Shopping increases a lot during these months. Hiking is also popular in October and November. You can also spend a day in Ta’ Qali, where you can find a huge flea market (starts in October). This is also a good time to visit historical sites as there are fewer people. Weather during these months is great for wandering about the traditional cities in Malta. And it gives you a chance to get to know the country first hand. Some restaurants by the beach and clubs start to close for the winter months.
Prices: Prices are much less now. You can easily get very good deals on flights and accommodation.
October and November are also part of the shoulder season, but during these months, swimming is most likely not an option. So if you want to visit historical sites and exploring the country, this may be the best time to visit Malta for you. If you like all of this but with warmer temperatures, than April to June might be a better fit.
DECEMBER TO MARCH
This is the peak of winter. The weather takes a rapid dive. Tourists are few. Possible outdoor activities decrease and streets are less lively. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing to do or that you can’t enjoy your trip.
Average temperature: 13-14°C
Weather: These months are the coldest of the year. Having said that, the cold is very manageable and is nowhere close to freezing conditions. Temperatures never go below 7-8 °C. Rain is to be expected and is sometimes accompanied by ice (although it never snows in Malta). Night time thunderstorms are not infrequent. Cold winds are also to be expected. Days are the shortest with about 8 hours of sunlight. It’s usually gets dark at around 5pm.
Things to do: Historical sites are better enjoyed during winter as there are practically no crowds. Hiking and horse riding are also awesome activities. Indoor games such as laser tag and room escape are popular in winter. Restaurants and Maltese food always make for a great outing. And partying in Paceville is always an option. Prices: Prices are the lowest of all seasons except during the holidays. These are the best dates to book fabulous hotels for affordable prices. Transport is also cheaper during these months as the winter rates apply. This is cheapest time to go to Malta.
If you enjoy sightseeing and hotel gateways, this season may be the best time to visit Malta for you. You will also need to not mind cold weather. If you would rather sunbathe or water ski, then this is obviously not the way to go.
