How To Make Pins: Learn How To Design Great Pinterest Graphics Using Canva For Free!
Most people view Pinterest as a social media platform, but it is most definitely not only that!
Pinterest is a search engine with a human touch.
In Pinterest, you search for something and a list of results come up, as it would on Google.
But what’s different in Pinterest is that the results are shown as images.
As a blogger, you probably heard about Pinterest, and about how it can be used to generate traffic.
Actually, in my opinion, it is the main way how a new blog can gain traffic and exposure.
And, if you ever used Pinterest, then you know that is especially visual.
So, in order to generate traffic from Pinterest, you need to create awesome, unique graphics that attract attention.
In this how to make pins tutorial, you will find everything you need to know to create unique and attractive Pinterest images.
How To Make Pins: The Basic Info
There are some things that everyone using Pinterest should know. And to start this tutorial, I thought that starting with the basics is best. So here goes:
The Best Image Size: 735px by 1102px
Other sizes which work well are: 700px by 1200px, 700px by 1350px and 700px by 1500px.
PROTIP: Horizontal images DO NOT do well on Pinterest. So don’t waste your time. Beautiful, long and clear images are what it’s about.
Colours That Do Well: In my experience, I found that lighter background colours tend to do better than darker tones.
Types Of Images: Images with people’s faces tend to be pinned less.
Now let’s get to the good part.
In this tutorial, I will show you 2 methods on how you can use a free Canva to create good-looking Pinterest images.
The Easy Method
This method basically uses the free templates that Canva provides.
One great advantage of this method is that it is incredibly easy and fast. There are also some drawbacks, which we are going to talk about later on.
The first thing you need to do is to create an account with Canva. Then, when you’re signed in you will see this header:
Select the ‘Pinterest Graphic’ design and it will take you to your 735px by 1102px blank sheet.
Next, you can select layouts (as shown above).
There you can find all the ready-made designs that Canva offers.
Choose one that suits your blog post.
As an example, I selected this one:
When your layout appears, it will have words already written on it.
You can just click on the words and change them to what you want to be written.
Also, in the above picture, you can see that when you click on the wording, a bunch of options came up.
The first from the left is the font. There are several font options you can choose.
Then you can change the font size and font colour.
You can also use bold, italics, etc.
The spacing refers to the letter spacing.
If you want, you can also delete the wordings on your design and start over.
To delete: just select what you want to delete, and click the black dustbin.
To write: you can head over to the ‘Text’ section and select a header/subheader/body:
PROTIP: To move around the text bubbles, you just need to drag them into place.
PROTIP 2: To use different fonts; split your words into multiple text bubbles.
If you want to add an extra something to your image, you can look for items in the search box.
In this example, I chose a shoe to add on top of my design. You can also look for borders, shapes, etc.
Then you just resize it and drag it into place.
And this is the final pin:
At this point, you just need to press the download button on the top right, and the pin is ready.
Disadvantages Of The Easy Method
• This method limits your creative possibilities.
• The images used in the free layouts are used a lot on Pinterest. This may penalize your pins with the pinners, and possibly with Pinterest itself.
• There is only a limited number of layouts available and so this method can’t be used forever. This also means that you may not find a layout fit for your post.
The Better Method
This method is a little more time-consuming than the other one. But, it also offers unlimited possible designs and uniqueness.
First, login into Canva and select either the ‘Pinterest Graphic’ as we did above, or you can use custom dimensions.
This does not make a difference in this method, but you might want to make your pin longer if you wish.
If you chose to use custom dimensions, all you need to do is to enter your measurements as shown above.
Next, you need to select your design layout. There are several options to this. You can choose a single picture layout, a 2 picture layout etc.
To do this, go to ‘Elements’, and then ‘Grids’.
In my example, I chose a 4 picture layout:
As shown above, you can change the background colour and the spacing between the images.
Then, you can head over to ‘Uploads’, where you can upload your own images (or images you downloaded elsewhere).
PROTIP: Using images you took yourself, ensures that your pins are truly unique. The next best alternative is to use paid stock photos. Free images tend to appear over and over on Pinterest, and so, decrease your pin’s chance to go viral.
For this part, you can also use the free images available on Canva, but again, you risk them being repetitive. To do this, go to ‘Elements’ and ‘Free Photos’.
To do this, go to ‘Elements’ and ‘Free Photos’.
After you choose your pictures, drag them into one of the pictures’ slots, as below:
Now, to change the background colour; go to ‘Background’ and select the colour you want.
Or you can scroll down and select a pattern.
If you want/need to add a background box where your text can show more: Go to ‘Elements’, then ‘Shapes’, and select a shape.
In the above picture, you can see that you can change the colour of the shape.
You can also change the transparency of the shape; either making it a solid colour, or a little see-through.
Next, you can add the text.
Go to ‘Text’ and choose one of the following text bubble types:
Click on the bubble that appears, and write your text.
You can also change your font, font size, colour, etc. from the white header row.
As always, you can use multiple text bubbles for multiple fonts and font sizes.
Again, to position your text and shapes, you just need to drag them.
Then, you can add an extra feature to your design by using the search box.
In this example, I am using a border.
The border colour is customizable.
And there you have it! Your final pin.
Just click the download button on the top right corner and you’re done.
Now you know how to create Pinterest images. The next part is all about how to make them stand out more, leading to more clicks and possibly going viral.
Tips To Make Your Images Stand Out More
• Font Size
Use larger font size to emphasize what your blog post is about. Make sure that your message goes through to the readers, the moment they see the pin.
• Call to action title
Don’t just make a nice looking pin. Make sure it prompts people to click on it and read the blog post. You need to add a catchy phrase to attract attention. Check out these 220+ words/phrases to get some inspiration.
• Use Unique Photos
Taking your own images, makes your pin look completely unique. This will unavoidably attract more attention.
If you don’t have time to create your own photos, buying stock photos is a good alternative. Although they are still used by quite a few people, they are much less popular than free stock images.
I, myself, have a flexible plan with DepositPhotos.
• Mobile Readability
After you submit your pin, go to a mobile device and check out how it looks on there. Remember that most Pinterest users are on mobile, and so, make sure your pins look good and visible on small screens.
As I said before, Pinterest is a type of search engine, and so, keywords play a big part in ranking. Make sure to use good (and many) keywords in your pin description.
