Fitness is an important factor of having a healthy life. Physical activity should be part of your weekly life. A good fitness routine should be well balanced and constant.
If you have managed to find a way to add fitness to your life, great! But if like me, you struggle to keep a fitness schedule, maybe it’s because you haven’t found the right plan yet.
How to plan a fitness routine you can actually stick to
Decide the frequency
How many times a week will you exercise? There is no right or wrong answer to this question. The amount of times you work out per week should be decided by you and your needs. It is useless to aim high because as time goes by you will get over tired and quit. The general rule of thumb is to exercise 3 to 6 times a week. You should decided on certain days every week, for example, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This way it is much easier to follow the schedule as your mind is already decided.
A good fitness routine should be varied. The variety should be twofold:
1. Different exercises targeting different areas.
2. Different exercises so that you don’t get bored.
A good way of planning variety is to assign a day to a type of exercise, for example, Monday will be focused on calorie burning. If you don’t like exercising that much, maybe you might consider doing these type of activities that let you exercise without even realising.
Fitness classes certainly have advantages over gym memberships. Although gyms are great for exercising, classes offer a much more personal approach. Classes are a great way to be motivated and will increase your accountability. You can also make friends during classes which will make you WANT to go. So when planning your fitness routine you should definitely consider adding fitness classes.
Duration of the work out
I have often asked personal trainers how long should a work out be.The only answer I have ever received is that it doesn’t matter. Whether you want a short intense workout or a longer one with more breaks, doesn’t affect the overall effectiveness. Figure out how much time YOU can spare and then build around that. Don’t be discouraged if you have little time, just make it worth it. By doing this, you can fit exercising in your routine whenever you have some spare time. Therefore less worry, less stress, more exercising.
Listen to good music
Music helps you keep a rhythm while exercising. Not only will you work out harder, but music also keeps you in a good state of mind. Make a playlist of your favourite upbeat songs to listen to while working out. You can play your playlist on online sites like YouTube. If you don’t have access to internet while exercising, you might want to join a membership to listen to music offline. Amazon prime offers this service ( and a lot more), so if you have it/want it, use it. Music is what makes a good work out into a great one.
Plan the rest of the day
If you don’t particularly enjoy exercising and so, you find it difficult to stick to a schedule, you can make yourself look forward to your work out sessions, by looking forward to the day itself. Plan fun activities for after the work out. This will motivate you and excite you to get through the day, including the work out.
Consult a professional
If you don’t have a clue about exercising and/or if you want someone to plan your exercises for you, you might want to consider consulting a personal trainer. You don’t need to work out with a trainer everyday but it can be very beneficial to schedule regular appointments. What your body needs is in constant flux. So a trainer can evaluate your weakness objectively and help you improve. If you joined a gym, try asking an instructor there for an evaluation. Therefore by changing your exercises, you will not get bored and seeing results will motivate you even more to keep the routine.
Building an achievable fitness routine is the key to getting fit. By using the above tips you will hopefully be able to!
