Make sure you are prepared. Read the 4 essential things to do before starting a blog.
There are plenty of blog posts out there that tell you that you can start a blog in mere minutes, which is somewhat true. You can set up a blog in minutes.
But that’s not the first thing you should do when starting your blog.
What they don’t tell you is that before you do the technical stuff, there are things you need to research and think about.
A blog is not just a domain name and a host. A blog is a brand, essentially a business. Would you start a business without a business plan??
I don’t think so.
So before you start setting up from a technical side, make sure that the following 4 steps are ready.
4 Things To Do Before Starting A Blog
1. Find Your Focus ( The So-Called Niche)
Are you thinking about setting up your blog, and then figure out what you want to write about?
Well, you can. But, there’s a better way.
When you’re starting a blog, figuring out what you’re going to write about is essential. I mean, ESSENTIAL.
Sure, you can set it up and just wing it. But, it’s going to take a really long time to establish yourself and get your desired audience.
When you find your niche before you set up your blog, you can shape your whole blog to target your desired audience. And so, your blog will grow much bigger in a shorter period of time.
Defining your niche is most definitely one of the things to do before starting a blog.

2. Blog Name
A blog name is the brand of the blog. It is the first thing your audience will see. And so, it is the first targeting opportunity.
You want to send a message through your blog name so that you attract the right audience. An audience which is interest in what you have to say and in your products.
If I have a food blog and I name it ‘Ilikecars.com’, it’s just going to confuse my audience. And do you know what people do when they’re confused? They leave and find someone who is more straightforward.
Blog naming is an important part of starting a blog and requires some thought before the blog actually exists. This will make it useful as part of your blogging strategy.

3. Have A Plan
You won’t believe how having a good blogging plan changes your whole perspective!
If you have clear, defined and above all, achievable goals, you’ll be able to clearly concentrate on achieving them and ultimately move forward in the blogging world.
But of course, as a beginner, you don’t really know what blogging goals should be like. And that’s OK.
Plans change in every aspect of life, and in blogging even more so.
So before you start the blog, make a rough plan for your first blogging year (keep it real people!). It’s OK to adjust along the way, but having clear goals to achieve each month will help you be in control.
PROTIP: Always make sure to break down your goals into simpler objectives so that they don’t overwhelm you.
One way how you can prepare your blogging plan is to;
Identify where you want to be in a year.
Assign something you want to achieve to each month (that will add up to your yearly goal).
Assign simpler goals to each week (that will add up to your monthly goal).
Write down to-do tasks for each day (that will add up to your weekly goal + other things you need to do).
In a year I want to be very known on social media.
One of my months will have the task of increasing my Facebook followers.
My weekly goals to achieve that monthly goal will be:
Week 1: Start a Facebook group. Invite your group members to follow you on Facebook.
Week 2: Create content which goes viral.
Week 3: Interact with influencers (through comments, by sharing their work etc). Add value and perspective so that people will notice you.
Week 4: See what worked.
My daily to do lists will reflect the above week goals plus I other blogging things I need to do.
The secret is to break it down into smaller tasks.
4. Connect with influencers
Connecting with established people in your niche is a great way to lay ground for your blog. Niche influencers appreciate long time audience and even more so if you add value to their blog posts.
Why should you connect with bloggers? If a blogger knows about you, they are more likely to:
• Take interest in your blog.
• Notice good blog posts and share them.
• Accept a guest post proposal.
• Get traffic to your blog from their audience.
PROTIP: Another reason why you should connect with bloggers is to get a feel of the niche and finding out what people lack/need. In the comments section, most people voice their opinions which usually include what they need. This is a great way to get ideas to target your niche
How to connect with bloggers:
• Share their blog posts and tag them, adding your opinion to the share.
• Comment on their blog.
• Send them an email, notifying them of your upcoming blog launch.
• Mention them in blog posts and let them know.
So there you have it: 4 essential things to do BEFORE starting a blog. These are just things you need to do or start doing before you set up your blog post.
Give these points some thought and you will have laid out the ground for your blog.
